The College of Law was established in Baghdad during the reign of the Turkish governor, Nazim Pasha, under the name of the Ottoman Law School. It was officially opened on September 1, 1908, and the international law branch at that time was not a distinguished department in the college, even after the introduction of amendments to its internal system in the years 1928,1936,1941. Everything related to this branch is some of the subjects taught to college students, which were known as the rights of public and private states, but the system that was established in the year 1954, which was followed by all the aforementioned systems, added a number of scientific departments, including the Department of Public and Private International Law, The branch of International Law became one of the distinguished academic branches in the College of Law until the year 1969 when the University of Baghdad reconsidered its structure and merged some colleges with each other. The College of Political Science was added to the College of Law, and the name of the college was changed to become the College of Law and Politics, which includes two departments: the Department of Law and the Department of Law. Politics and the Law Department now include five scientific branches, including the International Law Branch, which was then divided in 1980 into two branches, the Public International Law Branch and the Private International Law Branch. When the College of Law and Politics separated into two colleges, the College of Law and the College of Political Sciences, in 1987, the college was reformed. As it was before the merger of the two colleges, the College of Law became composed of four scientific branches, including the international law branch.

The Department of International Law is interested in teaching all subjects related to international law in order to prepare jurists familiar with international legal affairs, in addition to opening the department for postgraduate studies and awarding master’s and doctoral degrees in international law to supplement the legal arena with specialists who are able to contribute to advancing progress at the present time.
