The branch of private law was established according to Article 18 of the canceled Faculty of Law No. 8 of 1939, where the Department of Private Law supervises the teaching of the following subjects:

Civil rulings (the magazine, land rulings, endowments, and personal status rulings), (fundamentals of jurisprudence), (history of Islamic jurisprudence), (fundamentals of civil law), (comparing the magazine to civil law), (introduction to the study of law), (history of law), and (Roman law) (Commercial Law), (Principles of Civil Procedure), (Conciliation and Executive Procedures), and (Private International Law), and this branch consists of faculty members who teach advanced subjects. It is headed by the oldest professor among them.

The private law branch was mentioned in Article 14 of the College of Law Regulations No. 21 of 1943, where the private law branch is based and supervises the teaching of the following subjects:
Civil rulings (the law, land rulings, endowments, and personal status rulings), (fundamentals of jurisprudence and the history of Islamic jurisprudence), (sources of obligations and the theory of obligation itself), (fundamentals of law), (Roman law), (history of law), (commercial law), and (fundamentals of law). Civil Procedures), (Conciliation and Executive Procedures), and (Private International Law).

The successive systems of the college continued to maintain this department to supervise the teaching of the department’s courses in primary and higher studies and supervise the granting of master’s and doctoral degrees in the various branches of the department.

The private law branch is one of the most important branches of the College of Law – University of Baghdad. It specializes in treating legal relationships of a special nature in the transactions of individuals among themselves. It relates to special relationships in commercial and civil matters, as well as personal status matters.

The branch contains a group of professors with scientific titles, and the branch is keen to hold conferences, scientific seminars, and workshops on a regular basis on topics directly related to people’s lives.

The branch contains postgraduate studies (PhD and Master’s), and teaching in postgraduate studies is held by scientific titles (experienced professor, assistant professor), which contributes to raising the academic level of students.

Vision

The branch of private law works on formulating the phased features of social and human reality, whether present and immediate or future ones.

  Restoring the spirit of the Mesopotamian civilization that started from this land and was the author of the first ancient law; To show the ability of the great human legacy it bears; to paint a bright picture of a prosperous present, and to create hope for a more glorious tomorrow; In addition to the supremacy of man over the policy of social organization, through the authority of private laws of their specialized types (civil, commercial, and personal status),.

Goals

The private law branch seeks to build a (practical) legal generation with values and free will, capable of meeting the requirements of the labor market, in the intellectual, legislative, and judicial aspects of society, in support of the path of humanitarian directives in the legal environment.

Developing scientific research plans and courses for faculty members and postgraduate students, and promoting their content on a quality scale, through seriousness in contributing to the development of academic courses and solving problems related to the local community and market requirements.
