Under the patronage of the Dean of the College of Law, University of Baghdad, Professor Dr. Ali Hadi Al-Hilali, and under the supervision of the Head of the International Law Branch, Assistant Professor Dr. Mahmoud Khalil Jaafar, the College of Law at the University of Baghdad hosted the first introductory workshop for the national initiative to support energy and reduce emissions, where the initiative was approved by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers Joint efforts between the Ministries of Environment and Electricity on energy sustainability, reducing emissions and pollution, supporting rationalization and preserving the environment by supporting the launch of the National Energy and Emissions Reduction Initiative. Iraq today is in dire need to spread awareness about the necessity of preserving a safe environment and rationalizing energy and water consumption in light of climatic changes and their potential effects on our beloved country, which is witnessing many phenomena resulting from climatic changes such as dust storms, which have recently increased in rates, and the increase in the percentage of desertified and threatened lands. In addition to the drought that cast a shadow over the marshes of Iraq and the consequent cancellation of their accreditation within the World Heritage List, as well as the drying up of many water bodies and the decrease in the percentage of water and the consequent scarcity of agricultural crops and thus the destabilization of food security, all these phenomena are an inevitable result of the high The temperatures resulting from the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activity and the use of fossil fuels. For the purpose of shedding light on this initiative, Mr. Muhannad Shaker Mahmoud, Director of Quality at the General Company for Electric Power Production in the Central Region, gave a lecture in which he explained the size of the risks facing the world in general and Iraq in particular. In particular, the implications thereof and the mechanisms supported by the initiative to confront these risks.
After that, Assistant Professor Dr. Mahmoud Khalil Jaafar, Head of the International Law Branch, explained the role of international law in supporting climate action and environmental protection through his lecture in which he reviewed the most important international agreements and conferences that aim to protect the environment and support sustainable development.
