The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Dr. Rabab Khalil Ibrahim at the college\u2019s Mock Court Hall on Monday, 18 May 2026.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The workshop aimed to highlight the position of both the Iraqi federal legislator and the Kurdistan Region regarding domestic violence, as well as the necessity of issuing an independent federal law to address domestic violence issues.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The workshop addressed several topics, including:<\/span><\/h3>\n

1. The position of Iraqi federal legislation regarding combating violence against the family.<\/span>
\n2. The position of legislation in the Kurdistan Region regarding combating violence against the family.<\/span>
\n3. The role of the Iraqi judiciary, through its rulings and decisions, in protecting family members from domestic violence.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The workshop concluded with several recommendations, most notably:<\/span><\/h3>\n

1. The need to resolve the ongoing legislative debate and accelerate the discussion, approval, and enactment of the Federal Domestic Violence Law draft.<\/span>
\n2. The importance of ensuring that the law covers all forms of violence that family members may face, along with preventive measures to limit and reduce such violence, in addition to imposing penalties proportionate to the severity of the harm caused.<\/span>
\n3. Increasing the penalty imposed in cases of domestic violence leading to the death of a family member to life imprisonment instead of imprisonment for a period not exceeding fifteen years, considering that the family should represent a place of safety and stability for all its members, and transforming it into a cause of death warrants stricter punishment for the perpetrator.<\/span><\/h3>\n
