The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Law \u2013 University of Baghdad held a scientific workshop on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in the Virtual Court Hall, titled \u201cIrregular Migration in Light of International Law and State Responsibility.\u201d The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Sura Adeeb Hameed.<\/h3>\n

The workshop aimed to introduce the concept of irregular migration and distinguish it from asylum and lawful migration. It also addressed the main causes behind its spread, outlined its international legal framework, and highlighted the responsibility of states in limiting this phenomenon while ensuring the protection of migrants.<\/h3>\n

The session covered several key themes, including the concept and causes of irregular migration, its distinction from asylum, the position of international law regarding it, and the obligations of states under international commitments.<\/h3>\n

The workshop concluded with a set of recommendations, emphasizing the need to strengthen regional and international cooperation in migration management, update national legislation in line with international conventions, and launch awareness programs for youth about the risks of irregular migration. It also stressed the importance of supporting economic development projects in migrant-origin countries, providing safe and legal migration pathways, and training relevant authorities to apply international human rights standards, thereby contributing to a balanced and humane management of this phenomenon.<\/h3>\n
