The College of Law at the University of Baghdad held a scientific seminar titled \u201cThe Role of International Law in Protecting the Rights of Martyrs\u2019 Families \u2013 Iraq as a Model\u201d on Sunday, 8 March 2026, in the Model Court Hall at the college. The seminar was delivered by Assistant Professor Dr. Nebras Ibrahim Muslim and attended by a number of faculty members and college staff.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The seminar aimed to highlight the role played by international law in protecting the rights of martyrs\u2019 families and to clarify the legal obligations of states toward the families of victims and martyrs. It also sought to enhance legal and social awareness of their rights, examine the reality of national legislation and the extent of its compatibility with international standards, and present several practical proposals to develop protection and care mechanisms for this group.<\/span><\/h3>\n

The seminar included several main themes, including the conceptual framework of martyrs\u2019 families, the international legal basis for protecting their rights, and the rights of martyrs\u2019 families under international human rights law.<\/span><\/h3>\n

At the conclusion of the seminar, several recommendations were presented. The most important of these included developing national legislation in line with the rules of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, strengthening the role of relevant government institutions in providing financial, social, and psychological support to martyrs\u2019 families, establishing legal and awareness programs to inform them of their rights and the mechanisms for claiming them, and enhancing cooperation between the state and international organizations to support programs dedicated to their care.<\/span><\/h3>\n
