The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Law \u2013 University of Baghdad organized a scientific workshop titled \u201cEcocide within the Framework of International Criminal Law,\u201d presented by Dr. Nibras Ibrahim Muslim, on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the College of Law premises.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The workshop aimed to shed light on the crime of ecocide as an emerging offense that requires special attention at both national and international levels. It focused on defining the crime, outlining its legal elements, identifying its forms of commission, and discussing the possibility of recognizing ecocide as an independent crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

The workshop was structured around three main themes:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. \n

    Definition of the crime of ecocide.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
  2. \n

    Elements of the crime under international criminal law.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
  3. \n

    Forms of ecocide and its impacts on the environment and humanity.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    At the conclusion of the workshop, several important recommendations were presented, including:<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. \n

      The inclusion of ecocide as an independent category under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    2. \n

      Strengthening national legislation concerning environmental protection.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    3. \n

      Encouraging states to safeguard the environment during both peace and armed conflict.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    4. \n

      Organizing community awareness campaigns on environmental education.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n
    5. \n

      Highlighting the long-term negative impacts of ecocide on future generations.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      This workshop comes as part of the College’s ongoing commitment to activating the role of law in addressing contemporary environmental challenges and contributing to the development of a sustainable legal consciousness.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n
