The Continuing Education Unit at the College of Law – University of Baghdad organized a scientific workshop on Tuesday, 18 February 2026, entitled “Sustainable Development (Conceptual Framework)”, delivered by Assistant Lecturer Jihad Abbas Ali in the Model Court Hall at the college.

The workshop aimed to introduce the concept of sustainable development and its theoretical and practical importance, and to clarify the fundamental differences between sustainable development and related concepts, in order to strengthen scientific and legal awareness of this contemporary concept, which represents one of the main foundations of modern state policies.

The workshop included several main topics:

1.Defining sustainable development, and explaining the meaning of development and sustainability separately.

2.Distinguishing between the concepts of sustainability, growth, and modernity, and explaining the differences and overlaps between them.

3.Reviewing the goals of sustainable development, its various dimensions, and their impact on both the legal and social realities.

The workshop concluded with several recommendations, the most important of which included:

•The need to encourage the Iraqi government and decision-makers to give greater importance to sustainable development in public policies.

•Promoting and spreading a culture of sustainability and working toward its implementation at both the institutional and societal levels, in a way that contributes to the continued progress of the Iraqi state and the building of a civilized state based on equality and equal opportunities for all citizens.

This workshop is part of a series of scientific activities organized by the College of Law to raise awareness of contemporary issues and connect them to the legal and institutional framework of the state.
