The Human Rights Unit at the College of Law – University of Baghdad organized a scientific workshop on Sunday, December 14, 2025, entitled “Practical Mechanisms for Linking the Right to Life with the Labor Market.” The workshop was delivered by Assistant Lecturer Hiba Neama Mansour in the college’s Moot Court Hall.

The workshop aimed to highlight the legal dimension of the right to life and to clarify its close connection to the labor market through the provision of decent living conditions for workers, particularly from economic and social perspectives, in line with national and international legal standards.

The workshop addressed several important themes, most notably the legal framework of the right to life, the position of relevant international conventions, and the stance of the 2005 Constitution of the Republic of Iraq regarding this right. It also outlined key practical mechanisms that contribute to linking the right to life with the labor market, particularly the provision of occupational safety requirements for workers—such as helmets, protective gear, and gloves—in accordance with approved legal standards and regulations.

At the conclusion of the workshop, a number of recommendations were issued, most importantly the need to obligate companies and employers to provide occupational safety requirements at worksites, in addition to strengthening government oversight and enhancing the role of civil society organizations to ensure transparency and protect workers’ rights. These measures aim to safeguard the right to life and promote a safe working environment.
