The College of Law at the University of Baghdad organized, on the morning of Thursday, November 27, 2025, a workshop entitled “Operational Risk Management”, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Andalous Hamed Abdul, in the college’s Model Court Hall.

The workshop aimed to review the operational risks faced by banks, highlight gaps in internal control systems, and clarify the legal risks resulting from fraud or obstruction of banking operations, as these are among the main challenges affecting the efficiency of the financial system.

The workshop covered several main topics, including:

  • First Topic: Responsibilities of risk management units in banks and the duties of the Board of Directors toward them.

  • Second Topic: Tasks of senior management and mechanisms for identifying high-risk clients.

  • Third Topic: Market risks related to capital adequacy and price fluctuations.

  • Fourth Topic: Procedures necessary to strengthen risk management in banking institutions.

The workshop concluded with several important recommendations, most notably:

  1. Emphasizing the independence of internal audit units and enhancing their integration with compliance and information technology departments, with the necessity of recording operational incidents through a unified electronic system.

  2. Raising management standards and defining the authorities of each functional level to enable banks to address risks more efficiently.

  3. Preparing emergency response plans and adopting clear policies to prevent fraud in banking operations.

This workshop is part of a series of scientific activities organized by the college to enhance legal and professional awareness among students and researchers, and to support the academic environment with practical knowledge in the field of banking risk management.
