As part of the pioneering academic and professional role of the College of Law at the University of Baghdad in supporting the legislative process with specialized academic expertise, Professor Dr. Ali Hadi Al-Hilali, Dean of the College, participated as a member of the committee tasked with drafting the Personal Status Code, which was officially approved by the Iraqi Parliament today, Wednesday, August 27, 2025, in a session attended by 167 members of parliament, based on the draft submitted by the Shiite Endowment Office.
The committee commenced its work with its first meeting held in Najaf Al-Ashraf, followed by its second and third meetings at the Holy Kadhimiya Shrine, where the final wording of the code’s provisions was discussed before being submitted to the legislative authority.
On this occasion, Professor Dr. Ali Hadi Al-Hilali stated:
“The participation of the College of Law – University of Baghdad in the preparation of this legislative code represents a continuation of its academic journey in serving Iraqi legislation, and a reflection of its academic role in providing state institutions with specialized expertise, in a way that contributes to promoting justice and protecting the rights of families and society.”
The approval of this code is considered a pivotal legislative step in response to the guidance of the Supreme Religious Authority, and is expected to contribute to the development of the Iraqi legal system in line with the needs of social reality. This participation also reflects the distinguished status of the College of Law – University of Baghdad as a leading academic institution in Iraq and the region.
