As part of enhancing cooperation between academic institutions and government entities concerned with sustainable development, the College of Law at the University of Baghdad, represented by its Dean, Prof. Dr. Ali Hadi Atiyah, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the National Initiative for Energy Support and Emissions Reduction, chaired by the Technical Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Environment.
The signing of this memorandum was based on the cooperation mechanism regulations issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research with ministries and non-ministerial bodies (Regulation No. 160 of 2009), aiming to support initiatives related to energy, water, and emissions reduction, and to contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The memorandum seeks to support awareness efforts to rationalize the consumption of energy and water and to promote sustainable practices in the use of natural resources through effective coordination between members and coordinators of the National Initiative, thereby helping to implement the objectives of the national environmental policy.
The agreement included several key areas of cooperation, most notably:
1. Exchanging expertise and legal collaboration.
2. Organizing joint legal seminars and workshops on energy sustainability and environmental protection.
3. Supporting legal research projects submitted by the College in the field of environmental law.
4. Cooperating in drafting laws and regulations relevant to the work of the National Initiative.
5. Providing specialized legal consultations in areas of domestic and international law related to energy and the environment.
This cooperation represents an important step toward strengthening the role of the College of Law in supporting major national initiatives and activating the contribution of academic and legal expertise to the advancement of sustainable development goals in Iraq.
