Awareness Workshop at the College of Law on the Harms of Smoking to Individuals and Society

The Career Development and Employment Unit at the College of Law, University of Baghdad, organized an awareness workshop titled “Smoking and Its Harmful Effects on the Individual and Society” on Sunday, April 13, 2025, presented by Assistant Lecturer Rusul Khalid Ibrahim, at the College of Law building.

The workshop aimed to shed light on the physical and psychological health risks associated with smoking at the individual level, as well as to discuss the broader negative impacts of smoking on society, including economic, environmental, and social consequences. It also sought to encourage individuals to adopt a smoke-free lifestyle and to motivate smokers to quit.

The workshop covered three main topics:

  1. Introduction to smoking and its types (cigarettes, hookah/shisha, electronic cigarettes).
  2. Health effects of smoking on the individual.
  3. Societal impacts of smoking.

At the conclusion of the workshop, several key recommendations were made, including:

  1. The need to continue raising awareness about the harms of smoking through schools, educational institutions, and media platforms.
  2. Providing psychological and medical support for individuals seeking to quit smoking.
  3. Enacting strict laws to limit the sale of tobacco products and to prohibit smoking in public spaces.

This workshop reflects the College of Law’s commitment to promoting health awareness among students and the university community, and to fostering positive behaviors that support individual well-being and public health.
