On the evening of Thursday, March 27, 2025, the Holy Alawi Shrine in Najaf Ashraf hosted the first meeting of the committee tasked with writing the “Code of Sharia Rulings” concerning issues of personal status in Ja’fari law. The meeting was attended by a distinguished group of scholars, jurists, and professors from the religious seminary, in addition to a specialized legal assistance team.
The meeting saw the participation of senior judges, legal experts, and representatives from the State Council, as stipulated in the amendment to the Personal Status Law No. (1) of 2025, which mandates their assistance in drafting the code.
Among the participants was Professor Dr. Ali Hadi Atiyah, Dean of the College of Law at the University of Baghdad, who represented the academic legal institution in Iraq. He contributed his scientific perspective in discussing the legal foundations and formulations of the code, aiming to achieve harmony between the legal text and the spirit of Sharia rulings.
The meeting discussed the general framework of the topics that will be included in the code, the mechanisms for distributing roles among specialized committees, as well as emphasizing the importance of precise drafting in line with comparative experiences.
It is worth noting that the Scientific Council has completed significant parts of the draft code, which will undergo a thorough review by the legal experts committee. Future meetings will continue in the cities of Karbala and Kadhimiyah to ensure the project is finalized in its most accurate and complete form.
