The women’s Empowerment unit at the College of Law/ the University of Baghdad held a seminar entitled (Electronic Blackmail Faced by Women), delivered by the lecturer in Criminal Law (Asst. Lect. Rasull Khalid Ibrahim), on Sunday, 12/11/2023, on the model courtroom at the college.

The seminar aims to introduce the crime of electronic extortion on women, raise awareness of its seriousness, and indicate the causes of the crime and the effects resulting from it.

The seminar included several topics, including the definition of the crime of electronic extortion, its pillars, the types of electronic extortion to which women are exposed, its causes and the effects resulting from the crime of electronic blackmailing, and the position of the Iraqi legislator on the crime of electronic extortion.

The seminar came up with several recommendations, the most important of which is to call on the Iraqi legislator to speed up the issuance of laws on electronic crimes or amend the Penal Code and include a provision on the crime of electronic extortion, the need to spread awareness among women, especially girls about the dangers of wrong dealing with the internet and the need to maintain the confidentiality of information, private photos and videos, the need to encourage victims of the crime of electronic extortion to report the crime and not to implement the demands of the perpetrator (extortionist).
