On Sunday, 17/09/2023, the Faculty of Law at the University of Baghdad discussed in the model courtroom of the Faculty a master’s thesis in the field of international law by the student (Shahed Muhammad Salman) entitled (International Protection of Media Freedom, Satellite Channels as a Model).
The thesis aims to clarify the international protection of media freedom through satellite channels, as it is considered a human right, and to explain the efforts made by international organisations through decisions and declarations regulating this freedom.
The thesis consisted of three chapters, the first of which dealt with the concept of satellite media freedom in international law, the second with the efforts of international organisations to protect media freedom, and the third with the international responsibility arising from the actions of satellite broadcasters.
The letter made a number of recommendations, the most important of which was to call on the United Nations to adopt an international convention containing detailed rules to protect media freedom in the light of communication and technological developments, and to activate independent and effective international monitoring to verify the extent of countries’ commitment to international standards contained in resolutions and declarations protecting media freedom.
