The College of Law at the University of Baghdad discussed a master’s thesis in the international law branch of the student (Zahraa Shati Ibrahim), entitled (International Protection for Workers in the Marine Fishing Sector), on Tuesday, 09/12/2023, in the college’s model courtroom.
The thesis aims to limit and address violations that lead to reducing job opportunities in the fishing sector and to know the role of international law, with its various sources, including international agreements and international organizations, in dealing with the numerous violations and organized crimes to which sailors are exposed.
The thesis included three chapters, the first of which dealt with the concept of the marine worker and the legal framework for carrying out his activity, the second chapter the international protection mechanisms for workers in the fishing sector, and the third chapter dealt with confronting transnational crimes to which workers in the fishing sector are exposed.
The thesis came out with several recommendations, the most important of which was calling on the Iraqi legislator to further clarify his position regarding his definition of the concept of the maritime worker in the Seafarers’ Identity Law No. (51 of 1015). It suggested that all countries enter into and ratify the Maritime Labor Convention of 2007, which is one of the most prominent international agreements issued by the Organization International Labor Code, known as the Seafarers’ Rights Charter.
