The College of Law – University of Baghdad examined a master’s thesis titled “The Right to Access Environmental Information within the Framework of International Law” by Siham Mazen Sabah in the International Law on Monday, November 3, 2025, at the college’s conference hall.

The examination committee consisted of:

  1. Prof. Dr. Hadi Naeem Al-Maliki, Chairman
  2. Prof. Dr. Basheer Jomaa Abdul-Jabbar, Member
  3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nebras Ibrahim Muslim, Member
  4. Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Khalil Jaafar, Member and Supervisor

The thesis aimed to show that the right to access environmental information is no longer limited to the regional Aarhus Convention but has become a universal right and is considered part of human rights.

The thesis was divided into three chapters:

  1. Chapter One: The conceptual framework of the right to access environmental information.
  2. Chapter Two: The normative level of the right to environmental information.
  3. Chapter Three: The right to access environmental information in national legislation.

The thesis concluded with several recommendations, the most important being:

  1. The establishment of a specialized environmental court to handle environmental cases at both national and international levels.
  2. Enhancing environmental education and awareness among the public, particularly regarding access to environmental information through educational curricula, to promote living in a healthy environment.
